As a multicultural society most of us have come from somewhere else and remember the time when we felt strangers here and how before long we were accepted and are now citizens. We hope that the local community will rally round and welcome & support this family in practical and financial ways.
So often new settlers are made to feel lonely as there is an expectation that they don't speak English and communication will be difficult. Often neigbours don't even know who is next door.
We hope that this family will be accepted into your organisations, groups and homes.
Topics that need to be covered with them include: safety and emergency information, food handling, storm precautions, local transportation, phone calling cards, medicine OTC vs. prescription, Internet, Bank accounts, job search, education at local community colleges, resume writing and interview tips etc, how to make good use of libraries, how to get a driving license etc etc.
We are the lucky ones, living on this beautiful island. There are so many experiences we take for granted -coming from a land-locked country, they have not even seen the ocean yet!
