Talks between Nepal and Bhutan to try to secure their dignified repatriation continually broke down.
In 2007 the US intervened and agreed to take 60,000 refugees over the next 5 years.
Other Western Countries including Australia agreed to take a number as well. This process started in March 2008 and will take about 5 years to complete.

To many this was not an acceptable solution - they wanted only dignified repatriation to their homeland. Those speaking in favour of the third country solution were targeted with violence. After many families had successfully made the transition and reported back favourably, others became brave enough to apply and gradually the resistance lessoned.
USA has offered to take 60,000 Bhutanese refugees from Nepal. Other countries involved in the agreement are Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Denmark and Norway. Small communities have begun in each of these counties.
For many of the older people in particular this is not a solution. They are afraid to leave their culture and start anew with a different language. So many extended families are now scattered all around the word and think they will never seee eachother again. Thankfully modern electronic communication can help keep them in touch.
